Options for Breast Implants

At Benedetti Cosmetic Surgery, we do not take a "one-size-fits-all" approach to breast augmentation. We understand the very personal nature of this procedure, and appreciate that each patient has her own ideas about – and expectations for – surgery. To accommodate the diverse desires and needs of our breast augmentation patients, we offer a variety of choices for breast implants at our Tampa Bay, Florida area practice.

Saline or Silicone?

In recent years, women in the United States considering breast augmentation may once again choose between saline or silicone gel filled implants. While saline has been an option for more than 30 years, the newest generation of silicone gel implants has been available for several years and represents a significant step forward in terms of achieving both a natural look and feel. At Benedetti Cosmetic Surgery, we use Mentor implants for breast augmentation in Tampa, due to their long-standing reputation for integrity, safety, and quality.

Silicone Gel Implants

Dr. Benedetti uses Mentor MemoryGel™ breast implants, which are filled with a cohesive silicone that holds together if the implant ruptures. The implant can be torn, punctured, and even cut and it will still retain its shape. The silicone gel in these implants is composed of a proprietary formula that feels similar to actual breast tissue, and produces a very natural looking and feeling result. There is also less risk of the sloshing or rippling that is sometimes reported with saline implants. The majority of patients at Benedetti Cosmetic Surgery choose silicone implants.

Saline Filled Implants

When choosing the type of breast implant, some Tampa Bay women still feel more comfortable with saline for several reasons.

  • The fact that saline is harmlessly absorbed by the body in the case of implant rupture is an important factor for some women.
  • Since saline implants are not pre-filled, they offer more incision options than silicone gel implants.
  • Because of lower manufacturing costs, saline implants are also less expensive than silicone.

In general, most women believe that saline implants do not create as natural a look and feel as silicone implants. However, Dr. Benedetti can still use saline implants to achieve beautiful breast augmentation results.

Size & Profile

In addition to implant material, you must also decide on the size and profile of your implants. Dr. Benedetti will draw upon his years of experience and refined aesthetic sense to help guide you in this decision.

  • Size. Implant size is something Dr. Benedetti will instruct you to consider very carefully, because you don't want to have second thoughts about size after your surgery. He will ask you to do extensive research, and even collect photos that illustrate the look you want for your enhanced breasts. He uses implant sizers to allow you to test different sizes for look and feel, and sizing is not finalized until your last pre-op appointment.
  • Profile. Depending on your anatomy and your goals, you may choose a high, moderate plus, or moderate profile implant. The profile of the implant affects the projection of the breast, with high profile implants projecting the furthest from the chest wall, and moderate profile implants projecting the least.

Your choice of breast implants has a big impact on the way your breasts will look and feel after your breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Benedetti and his staff are committed to helping you decide on the size and shape that creates the look you want. We will make every effort to assure that you are comfortable with your choice, and that you are thrilled with your results.
