Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
If you are an adult woman in good physical and emotional health and would like to increase the size of your breasts, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Some women have always been dissatisfied with the size of their breasts, while others are unhappy with the loss of volume that has occurred with age, weight loss or childbearing. In any case, at our practice in Tampa Bay, breast augmentation is recommended for women who feel that larger breasts will improve their self image, and who have chosen surgery to fulfill their own wishes, not to meet someone else's expectations.
Are there age restrictions on breast augmentation?
Women of varying ages seek breast enhancement at our Tampa Bay, Florida area practice to improve their appearance and their overall sense of well being. Women as young as 18 may undergo breast augmentation surgery, but their implant options are limited to saline filled implants. Silicone gel implants are available to breast augmentation patients who are 22 years of age or older. As the population ages, more and more women in their 40s and 50s are choosing breast augmentation to achieve a more balanced, feminine, or voluptuous appearance.
What if my breasts are two different sizes?
In many cases, breasts of differing size (asymmetrical breasts) can be corrected during breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Benedetti can use two different implant sizes or implants with different projections to create a more symmetrical appearance for your breasts. In some cases, he will use an implant to add volume and re-shape only one breast in order to better match the other. However, no woman has perfectly symmetrical breasts, and subtle differences should be expected as a part of your natural looking results.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
The vast majority of women with breast implants should not experience problems with breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery. However, certain breast augmentation techniques, such as subglandular implant placement, pose a slightly higher risk of interfering with breastfeeding. If you think you may want to breastfeed in the future, Dr. Benedetti will work with you to develop an approach to your breast augmentation that should not compromise your ability to nurse your baby. Furthermore, numerous scientific studies have proven that breast implants pose no risk of contaminating breast milk.
Will breast augmentation affect my fitness routine?
Most women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery have continued to lead active, physically fit lives. Most sports and fitness activities should not be affected by increasing your breast size to a reasonable, proportional degree. Very large breasts can compromise your arm range of motion and may make jogging or aerobics uncomfortable, so you will be advised to carefully consider how large you want to go. Dr. Benedetti will discuss your lifestyle and your expectations in great detail during your consultation, and will consider these when recommending an implant size.
Are breast implants associated with an increase in breast cancer?
There has been no scientific evidence to date showing an increased rate of breast cancer in women who have undergone breast augmentation. In fact, breast augmentation patients, statistically, exhibit a slightly lower than average rate of breast cancer. Furthermore, breast implants have not been shown to interfere with the diagnosis of breast cancer through mammograms. Mammograms need to be performed differently on women with breast implants, and the radiologist may need more time to read the results. Therefore, it is essential that you inform the technician that you have breast implants so that they may make the appropriate adjustments.
