Breast Augmentation Techniques
Women face many choices when considering breast augmentation. In the Tampa Bay, Florida area there are numerous surgeons who perform breast augmentation, as well as many different surgical approaches and techniques. Some surgeons do not offer the full range of options, and some will essentially make these important decisions for you – rather than with you – based on the techniques that they personally prefer.
Dr. Jeremy Benedetti relies on his years of experience as a board-certified plastic surgeon to help guide you through the many decisions that will shape your breast augmentation experience and outcome. He believes in developing strong communication with his patients, to ensure that each patient's needs and goals are being heard and understood. Together, you will choose the right breast implants and determine the surgical techniques that will best achieve the results you want.

Incision Type
The type of incision used during breast augmentation is influenced by your anatomy, your goals, and the size and type of breast implants in Tampa that you choose. Dr. Benedetti will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each option with you, and help guide you toward the best choice.
Inframammary Incision
The most commonly-used incision is the inframammary incision, which is made along the fold beneath the breast. This incision allows Dr. Benedetti the best access to the interior chest wall, and can be re-used for subsequent breast surgeries should the need arise. With this technique, Dr. Benedetti can place the breast implant either above or beneath the pectoral muscle. The faint scars that result from this incision are concealed beneath the breast, and are easily hidden under a bathing suit top or bra.
Periareolar Incision
Another effective and widely-used incision is the periareolar incision. This incision is made along the lower border of the areola, the circle of more darkly pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. This allows Dr. Benedetti good access to the interior breast anatomy, and leaves very little visible scarring. When the small incisions heal, the faint scars are well concealed due to the color and texture of the areolar border.
There are other incision options that are less commonly used that Dr. Benedetti can discuss with you during your consultation.
Implant Placement
You will need to decide whether you would like your implants placed beneath the chest muscles (submuscular) or between the chest muscles and the breast tissue (subglandular). When discussing implant placement, Dr. Benedetti will help you decide which location works best for your lifestyle, your anatomy and your appearance goals.
Subglandular Implant Placement
Subglandular implant placement refers to placing the implant behind the breast tissue, but in front of the pectoral muscles. Some women choose this option because there is less discomfort and a quicker recovery, since there is no releasing of the muscles. However, there are some drawbacks:
- In women who have thin skin or little breast tissue, the implant may be highly visible, creating a less natural-looking result.
- There is a greater incidence of capsular contracture – a complication in which scar tissue tightens abnormally around the implant – with this technique.
- This placement may also cause more interference with future mammograms.
Submuscular Implant Placement
Submuscular implant placement involves placing the implant behind both the breast tissue and the pectoral muscles, which typically creates a result that looks and feels more natural. Because this technique requires some releasing of the muscles, recovery may involve more discomfort and downtime. However, the incidence of rippling and capsular contracture is much lower. There is also less interference with future mammograms because muscles and all of the breast tissue are in front of the implant.
