About Breast Reduction
Beyond Breast Enhancement

Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure to reduce the size of overly large breasts by removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue. Women choose breast reduction for a variety of reasons:
- To alleviate physical and emotional discomfort
- To achieve better body proportions
- To improve range of motion and ability to participate in physical activities
Even teenagers may be candidates for breast reduction surgery in Tampa, although Dr. Benedetti typically recommends waiting until the breasts are fully developed before undergoing breast reduction surgery. A breast lift is often performed in conjunction with this procedure, given that overly large breasts have an increased tendency to sag.
Dr. Benedetti usually performs breast reduction with a vertical approach or "lollipop" incision. This pattern is comprised of a circular incision around the areola and a thin vertical incision down the underside of the breast. This approach eliminates the need for the long incision at the breast fold which is only required in some patients with extremely large breasts. Through these incisions, Dr. Benedetti will reduce the size of the breasts by carefully removing excess skin, fat, and tissue. In addition, Dr. Benedetti will internally reshape the breasts providing more roundness and creating internal support of the breast tissue. The result is breasts that are not simply smaller, but also lifted and reshaped to a more youthful appearance. Dr. Benedetti can also reduce the size of enlarged areolas and address issues with breast or areolar asymmetries during the breast reduction procedure.

Recovery and Results
Prior to your surgery, you will be given detailed instructions – both written and verbal – about how to properly take care of yourself while you are healing from surgery. You should plan to set aside 5 to 7 days in order to rest while your body recuperates, and swelling, bruising, and discomfort subside. After two days, your bandages will be removed, and you will be fitted with a support bra that will help reduce comfort and promote healing. Dr. Benedetti will advise you as to when you can resume exercise. He typically allows patients to resume some light exercise such as walking on a treadmill or using a stationary bike at 2 weeks, increasing exercise intensity around the 4 week period and back to all exercise and heavy lifting at approximately 6 weeks.
Breast reduction results are immediate, though incisions will continue to fade over several months. Factors such as weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the aging process can affect the longevity of your results. However, if your weight remains stable and you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you should be able to enjoy the results of your breast reduction for many years.
